How to Clean Windows [and the Best Time of Year to Do So]

Cleaning windows is about technique...and timing.

Cleaning windows is hard work at the best times. You need to choose a time of year that offers the longest lasting result, so use the guide below to choose the best time for you:

It can be argued that the best time of year to clean your windows is in the spring when the inclement winter weather has made the windows their dirtiest. To avoid leaving streaks it’s best to choose a day with plenty of cloud cover. If there’s a breeze clean in the same direction to prevent spray landing on the cleaned panes. If it’s a sunny day then start early before the sun gets high in the sky.

Summer time cleaning is ideal to remove all the pollen that’s been distributed in the spring. However it can be a difficult time to clean in the direct sun as the glass is already hot and the cleaning solution will evaporate very quickly. The art here is to clean rapidly to try and avoid streaks. The advantage of a sun that’s high in the sky is that it does tend to hide any imperfections. Early morning cleaning could help eliminate these problems and being able to leave windows open as you do the interior clean is a huge benefit.

Autumn window cleaning seems quite strange as it can often be very wet. However rain will not affect the cleanliness of your windows. Rain is pure and doesn’t contain any minerals, salts or chemicals and the only reason your windows look dirty after the showers is because they were dirty before! The benefits of washing windows during this season are the mild temperatures and the natural drying without streaks.

Winter washing your windows is possible even during very low temperatures as you can use a car washing fluid instead of a window cleaning product. The alcohol in the solution won’t freeze as you use it. Again try and choose a cloudy day as this helps stop the cleaning solution drying too quickly. Rapid drying leads to ugly streaking and makes lots more work. When you have to clean your windows during very cold weather it’s advisable to wear water proof gloves to protect your hands from the cold and the cleaning solution.
