Whirlpool began in 1908, after Lou Upton lost his savings in a business venture for manufacturing household equipment that didn't work out. He was allowed to select the patents from one of the products as a return on his investment, and he chose the hand washing machine patents that he believed could be automated with electricity. Lou and his brother and uncle produced a motor-driven washing machine, which was a success and later lead to the Whirlpool Corporation.
With appliances marketed and sold in every country worldwide, Whirlpool Corporation is clearly a leader in the $120 billion home appliance industry. The organization maintains 67 manufacturing and research centers all around the world. Whirlpool creates appliances in all categories, from Whirlpool refrigerators and Whirlpool dishwashers to fabric care, water filtration, countertop appliances and garage organization. In addition to the appliances with the Whirlpool logo, the company also markets a number of other well recognized brands, including Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid and more.
