The advantage of wool is that it is naturally self extinguishing and if it does char, the spot can often be rubbed away leaving little visible damage. Being a natural fiber, wool will char but will not melt as will synthetic fibers.
• All of their hearth rugs meet the CPSC standard FF 1 - 70 for flammability of carpets. This test is often called the “pill test” and certifies that the carpet will not continue to support combustion once the ignition source has cooled or been removed. The ember that pops out may char a spot on the hearth rug but the rug will not burn. It will protect the underlying surface.
