I had concerns about the accuracy of this product because of the design. I could not and still do not understand how this scale can be accurate based on the placement of the sensors at one outside edge of the weight platter. However, the first thing I did upon receiveing the scale was to place an item on the scale and move it around the platter to see if the registered weight would change. It did not change. Also, the accuracy of the scale down to 0.05 oz makes it suitable for a secondary use as a postal scale for letters & small packages.

We bought this item becuase we wanted to know exactly how much a "portion" size was of our favorite proteins (meat, chicken, fish), and have that visual to use as a guide. Also, I find the scale useful in cooking because you really want to weigh your flours (cakes, pancakes, etc.) and not go by filling statndard measuring cups, or spoons. Due to the density of flours and moisture in the air, it is better to get the exact weight so you know you are not using more or less than desired of a product.

Finally, a very precise, easy to use, way good looking on the counter scale. I bake bread and the differences in the amount of flour that gets into a measuring cup, depending on whether you dip and sweep or fluff and scoop, can mean the difference between a light, airy, crusty bread or a dense heavy brick.
This scale offers either lbs/ozs or the easier to use grams units. Since I bake a lot of European and artisinal breads, I find the grams unit much more accurate. The option is yours at the press of a button.
The tare feature makes this scale especially easy to use. Put your bowl, measuring cup, plate, etc., on the scale, press "tare" and the readout goes back to zero. Measure out your flour, press tare again and back to zero, put next ingredient in etc. It doesn't get any more accurate than this.
The brushed finish makes it easy to clean with a damp cloth, the buttons have a good solid feel for ham-fisted people like me, and the glass weighing shelf is nice and thick.
Up to now, I've never attempted to bake pastry because of the precise measurements involved. With this scale I can't wait to try that strawberry-rhubarb pie recipe I've been saving.

Best Scale I Have Used
By BrettVerified Purchaser from Salt Lake City, UT on 8/21/2007
Describe Yourself:
Business Professional
Pros:
Accurate, Easy to Use, Sensitive, Versatile
Cons:
Difficult to Store
Best Uses:
Accurate Recipies, Portion Control
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have tried using a lot of scales to do both portion control and cook using accurate measurements. This scale, the latest from Soehnle, is by far the best. It has a great range of measurements, is very sensitive, and is easy to use.

For me, being able to cook accurately, which means using weight instead of cup and spoon measures, is most important. Other scales weren't sensitive enough and were hard to use. I can breeze through recipes with this scale. It is also easy to plate food with portions.

The only thing that I would like to see, is something the scale can fit in when not in use to protect it.

I never owned a kitchen scale before, and this one was rated highly by America's Test Kitchens. So, I thought it was a safe investment. The price was right. I have used it several times since I bought it. I have it sitting out on my counter so that I do use it more often. I like knowing that now my measurements will be accurate. It is easy to operate.

I would recommend to the manufacturer that they write out the directions rather than relying on the pictorial form. I do have some concern over the plastic elbow on which the glass rests, but I guess we will see if this holds up over time.

Soehnle scale Model 65055
By Sparkling WatersVerified Purchaser from Michigan on 4/9/2007
Pros:
Easy clean-up, Easy Operation, High Quality, Sleek look
Cons:
Clarity of instructions
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I loved the modern look as soon as I saw it. I read the instruction and thought it was not very clear, so the instruction sheet is my only con. I figured it out though and realized that the operation is so simple that one doesn't need much guidance. I love the easy clean -up and I can put a large bowl on top, tara it and then keep adding itmes without changing my bowls, as I used to do. I am happy that I can change from grams to lbs. as I use many German recipes.

Accurate, easy to read scale
By Kate's MomVerified Purchaser from Fresno, CA on 3/21/2007
Pros:
Good Value, High Quality
Cons:
none
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this scale based on the recommendation from Cook's Illustrated. I haven't had it too long, so I can't vouch for the durability. But so far it's wonderful. So many advantages: weighs to the hundredth, easy to switch between grams and pounds, the platform makes it easy to read the scale, and it's beautiful!

I can't weight to use it!
By QVerified Purchaser from Reston, Virginia on 3/9/2007
Pros:
Excellent Value, High Quality
Cons:
Wish there was more heft
Best Uses:
Baking ingredients
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I very much enjoy the scale and it does all the things it was advertised to do-- and does them well. I wish it felt a bit heavier, perhaps less plasticky. Do to that, I am not sure that I will use it too much for meats weighing more than a few pounds and instead will primarily rely on it for baking.

Love it. Would recommend it to everyone!
By JanetVerified Purchaser from Johnston, RI on 2/24/2007
Pros:
Beautiful design, Durable, Good Value, High Quality
Cons:
I have found none
Best Uses:
Weighing dry ingredients, Weighing pkgs for mailing
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this Make & Model because it is the scale recommended by Cooks Illustrated & I have not been disappointed.
It performs exactly as described. It scored high in all areas - Easy to use; easy to read digital display; weighs in both pounds & Kg so I can use recipes from England etc.
One of the most useful things is that it zeros out so I can just put one bowl on the scale, add an ingredient, zero out, then add the next ingredient. My nut breads, muffins, etc are consistently good when the ingredients are weighed.
Also, I send a lot of packages & the scale is perfect for this. It weighs to two decimal places allowing me to adjust packaging
envelope/card/wrapping paper/tissue/type of ribbon, etc. An extra .05 oz can put the package into the next shipping rate. I save on shipping costs with all the packages I send out.
On top of all that it is beautifully designed. Simple and elegant.

Bottom Line:

I bought this because it was rated best kitchen scale by Cooks' Illustrated and they were right. Easy to use, accurate and sleek. the only drawback is that it is a bit larger than some other models, so finding the perfect spot is important. I have it in a convenient cupboard.

Best Uses:
Metric American, Tares with a dish on it
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love how sleek it looks on the counter and that you can weigh in metric & American. Wouldn't mind if it could weigh in a higher weight than it does to accomodate a larger dish before taring.

Functional and Beautiful!
By Marky G. from Star Prairie, WI on 2/20/2007
Pros:
Good Value, High Quality, Stylish
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I've only had it a few weeks, so I can't comment on its durability, though it seems very well-made. I loved the price (I'd seen it much higher [...]), it works great and looks lovely. My only mild criticism of the scale is that it would be nice if the digital readout lit up--not that it's at all difficult to read--it would just be better in low light situations, and would look cool. I would have given it 4 and a HALF stars if the website had allowed it.

The only downside is that the glass plate does not remove for easier cleaning.

By ycarg from Atlanta, GA on 2/16/2007
Pros:
Elegant Design, Highly Accurate, High Quality
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The elegance of the design is worth the loss of axial stability that resulted from the reduction in base size from Soehnle's previous model.

The expansion of the Avoirdupois scale from .5 to .05 ounce accuracy is a great improvement.

As to accuracy: An object weighing 182.9 grams on a triple-beam balance scale indicated 184 grams on the Soehnle. Astonishing accuracy.
