Owned saf-t-grates since 1970, replaced with a new one in 2003. Very Tough, only grate that keeps the coals in the grate properly for hot buning and quick igniting of new wood. If you use extra center section(4 sections not 3), be sure to order an additional leg piece for the extra section.[...]

I had gotten a regular grate that didn't keep the wood in place. Since I had the saf-t grate in my other house I didn't know any better. This grate is great and the other one is going into my outdoor firepit where it won't matter if the wood moves around and falls off the grate.
The grate was delivered sooner than promised and came in a sturdy container.

I have a small fireplace and therefore purchased the 18 inch model, however it is too high (4") off the fireplace floor to direct heat into the room as it was described and not long enough for larger pieces of wood. I took it to a welder and had an inch and a half taken off the legs and it now works fine.

I love this grate so far. With the extender it fits perfectly in our fireplace. My only problem is that the small hole get blocked by ash and embers. I need to use a paint brush to clean them out. I like the fact that the grate appears to hold up to the all-time use we put it through. I will let you know how it holds up after the burning season.

Coals stay with the wood and do not fall to hearth
Fire burns hotter as a result.
Easier to keep going, newly fed wood fires right up.
Only drawback is that you must place kindling and fire starter (paper, fatwood, etc) ON the grate to get the fire going and not UNDER it. Learned that after the first fire and not it's not an issue.

We needed a fireplace grate for our new home. This is perfect. If the wood shifts when burning, the embers just roll together. The fire does not fall appart. As a newbie fire starter- I am thrilled with my fire masterpieces!
