In earlier times, the well appointed fireplace was never considered complete unless it included a cast iron fireback. Today, the fireback's usefulness and charm have been rediscovered and are again at the center of the hearth and home.
The dated Great Oak fireback was the second design created for the first year of original fireback production in 1979. A homage to all that we receive from the tree and the Oak in particular as a symbol of strength and durability.
This fireback follows a tradition observed in old firebacks and stove plates of the dating each production year. We jumped the gun a little on this tradition by casting 1980 in the spring of 1979.
The artist got his first inspiration while still in art school and visiting the Mercer Museum of Doylestown in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The Mercer Museum exhibits trace the preindustrial history of this country, it's collection of firebacks is unparalleled in the United States.
Wishing to continue this tradition rather than be contented with copying from the past, artist J. Del Conner created the Oak Tree fireback without a historic counter part. As such, this fireback was the first new fireback offered to the American public in a very, very long time.
Efficiency - Positioned against the back wall of a fireplace, a fireback protects the masonry of the back wall and radiates the heat of the fire forward. By reflecting light and heat from the fire out into the room, a fireback is a noticeable improvement to the hearth. This warmth is gained whether a fireback is used with wood fires or gas logs.
Protection - A cast iron fireback is still the best way to protect a hearth's back wall from decay. Despite advances in technology, the harsh rays of the fire render even modern refractory material vulnerable to damage and the likelihood of expensive repairs. A fireback will effectively prevent any further damage to the back wall.
Aesthetics - As a sculptural accent in what is usually the natural focal point of a home, a fireback lends visual warmth and interest to a hearth whether it's with a roaring fire or by soft candlelight.
