Comments about Napoleon 1402 Wood Burning Insert:
We use our wood insert 24/7. I bought many firestarters and don't even use them. We stock the stove before we go to bed, and the coals are still hot in the morning, only to stock it again. No starters necessary. Depending on how cold it is outside and who is home, we average stocking 3 times during the day. Although never recommended to run a fire while not home, we feel comfortable leaving with logs burning, keeping the damper closed and the door secure. With a 2500 sq foot split ranch home, we have found our gas bill drop from an average of $120 to $30 running the fire 24/7. With running the intermittant fan on hi consistently, our electric bill increased approx $40 (which could have been due to very many outside xmas lites). Running the fan on high also does require increasing the volume on the tv and we tend to disagree on whether we should increase the volume on the tv or decrease the level of the fan. I prefer lower fan, quieter room and he prefers higher fan, lower heating bill and doesn't mind louder tv. Even though I do not prefer hearing the intermittant fan on hi all the time, it is still a very quiet fan and is a pro for this insert. The rooms on each end of the house are still a little cooler and the fan runs hi at night which is soft enough to not disturb any sleep. Even though not as warm as the center of the house, it's much warmer then when we had the furnace with a ventless fireplace that was off at night, unlike the insert. My dogs also love hanging out by the fireplace to keep warm, especially after a long walk in the cold, or in them morning when they're let out of their crate. Overall, if I were looking for another insert, I would highly recommend this product. If you have the option for a full wood burner, they do give more heat without the fans and that would be the ideal.
