We added this after our kitchen was built, so we wanted a stand-alone that could sit in a closet next the recycling bins. It reduces our trash to a bag a week, important in our rural area where trash is paid for by the bag. It is not quiet, but runs for so short a time that presents no problem, and as it is our first compactor, we have no valid noise comparison
