How to Build a Raised Garden Bed

Materials:
  • 4”x4”x3’ untreated post (1)
  • Soil
  • 3" wood screws
  • 2”x8”x8’ untreated boads (2)

  • Square
  • Electric drill and bits
  • Shovel
  • Circular saw
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Carpenter's level

10 steps on 'How to Build a Raised Garden Bed'

  1. Remove sod

    Pick a sunny location and remove the sod.

  2. Make sure ground is level

    Make sure ground is level

    Use your carpenter’s level to be sure the ground is level.

  3. Cut the 2”x8”x8’s in half

    Cut the 2”x8”x8’s in half

    Cut the 2”x8”x8’s in half. Measure 4’ from the end and make a mark. Use the square to mark a straight line then cut along the line with the circular saw. These will be the sides.

  4. Make corner posts

    Make corner posts

    Cut 4 – 7 ¼” lengths from the 4”x4”x3’ post. These will be the corner posts.

  5. Place side board

    Place side board

    On a flat surface, place a side board on two corner posts keeping the board even with the posts.

  6. Drill three pilot holes

    Drill three pilot holes

    Drill three pilot holes into the side piece keeping them evenly spaced and approximately 1” from the ends.

  7. Secure the board to the post

    Secure the board to the post

    Secure the board to the post with 3” screws. Do the same for the other end. Do this on two side boards.

  8. Drill holes

    The other two side boards will overlap so drill the holes in approximately 3” from the end or the screws will miss the posts.

  9. Secure boards

    Secure boards

    Secure the last two boards with the 3” wood screws.

  10. Place the frame

    Place the frame

    Place the frame in your prepared location and fill with soil.
