  • Q:

I am wondering if your typical house sparrows would roost in this house, also if so how many would be able to fit inside this roosting birdhouse? (Horizontal winter roost birdhouse)

      A:

Hello, thanks for the question. Per Coveside, "Yes, the size of this roost box is appropriate for house sparrows. A dozen could certainly fit in there, though that is unlikely to actually happen.

Given your question, you should be made aware that House Sparrows, like Starlings, are a non-native, artificially introduced species in North America. They have a very detrimental effect on a number of native bird species and should not be encouraged in any way (fed, housed …etc.) Doing so is quite irresponsible and causes a net negative impact on native species."

  • Q:

I like this box, but question the use of unfinished white pine in the weather. Should this box be painted on the outside? Is it available in rough sawn western red cedar?

      A:

Coveside’s nest boxes are made of sustainably grown Eastern White Pine. They do not require paint or stain and should last 7+ years on average. The most important thing that can be done to preserve long term functionality is a good seasonal cleaning, inside and out, with a brush, soap and water and perhaps a weak bleach solution, followed by a thorough rinse, in order to remove germs and parasites.

Over time, the exterior wood will darken, turn gray and attain a weathered patina, much like barn board.

Should you wish to paint or stain, care must be taken not to use a petroleum-based product. Water-based (acrylic) only and on the exterior only.

Coveside’s preference in the way of wood preservatives are Tung Oil or Boiled Linseed Oil. Both are naturally derived, non-toxic and effective preservatives, if applied in a light seasonal coating.
