I don't know about croquet but I used to love horseshoes as a kid. These days, It's going to be tough to convince kids that horseshoes is a fun alternative to the playstation, maybe offer an incentive like prizes for the winners. Candy makes everything more fun to kids.

I agree, it's hard to get kids outside to get the exercise they need instead of watching TV or playing video games all day. Like Ben said, maybe some kind of incentive would be good - perhaps the winner could get time off their chores or get to pick a fun family day trip. You could even invite some of their friends over to play a game outside. :)

I think team sports are the way to go. A little cornhole or some horseshoes. Horseshoes on the beach is great. But team sports are really the way to go - something where they're forced to go outside...soccer, basketball, baseball, hockey, etc. Even some badminton or as you may call it shuttlecock can be great fun in the great outdoors. You strike the shuttlecock with your racket, much like in tennis. What about Dogeball? Red Light, Green Light, 1,2,3? SPUD? Red Rover? Field Goal Kicking? Freeze-Tag. Man-Hunt. Wiffle Ball? Nothing like a little wiff-a-q on the tennis courts in F-Town.

If you have the room for it, the one sport that never fails is volleyball. It doesn't require amazing hand-eye, you can fudge the rules a bit to allow "carrying" and there are always spectacular plays that keep the game lively.

If that fails, hill-billy horseshoes. All the way.

Everybody (well, most people at a pick-up/BBQ volleyball game "carries"), you're right, so good call yes, you have to adjust the rules to allow for it. You are right though, there really isn't anything better than a pick-up volleyball game. Even if it's not beach volleyball which is great for using the real-life Madden stick to make Web-Gems and Highlight Reel plays. Even on the normal grass it's the best. You also have to adjust the rules for people running into and going over the net. Hopefully you have somebody there with some hops so that you can retrieve the ball quickly after knocking it over the neighbor's fence.

Wiffle Ball I would say tops the list of best yard games to play. All through my childhood growing up we always had wiffle ball games/tourney's in my backyard. Even to this day my friends/family still on occassion bust out the old yellow plastic bat to play. If space is permitting you can always alter the rules a bit or just do a homerun derby.

Funny you two say people can "fudge" the rules and allow caring because the was the one thing whenever at BBQ's that people would always call out. Granted most of the time the people playing were super competitve.

How many attempts do I get at trying to hit your screwball?

Another outdoor game that can be played is capture the flag. You get divided into 2 teams, if you are playing in your back yard you can either split it by two or one team can take the front yard and one can take the back yard as their territory. Each team has to hide their own flags in the time given(about 3-5min) within their designated territory.

Once the flag is hidden you call out that you are finished. Then you simply try to get the other teams flag. If you get caught and tagged by the opponent on their territory you had to go to jail and could only be freed by a teammate who grabs you when your opponent isn't looking.

Its a fun outdoor activity that gets the kids running.

Three strikes you're out. Although in real wiffleball it would be only two if swinging. One if looking.

Can we do it in the office so if I hit someone with the ball I get bonus points?

Why, do you want to hurt somebody in the office? I don't think they would appreciate getting hit by wiffle balls. While they are made of plastic they don't feel good when they hit your face. Jeez Louise.

Casualties of the game my friend. It would be like going to a baseball game, gotta be on your toes for any incoming balls.

What do you mean by "grab you?" I never played that it mattered if the opponent is looking or not. You just took the risk of getting tagged by going into your opponent's territory.

Pick-up football, like two hand touch. There't going to be a little of that going on Thursday.

Here's my latest thought: Find the yard games you want to introduce to your kids and then go buy the Wii version. Once they get bored of that, suggest they try the real thing.

You could always set up a big screen in the back yard. Heck, I've got some neighbors that did exactly that-I don't know if they've got a video game hooked up to it though.
